Ruidoso, NM – Residents near the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon and Ruidoso Complex burn scars face a life-threatening risk of flash flooding today, with heavy rainfall expected across southeastern New Mexico through this evening. The developing system also brings a possibility of severe thunderstorms to the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. MDT Tuesday. Areas on and below the recent burn scars are highly susceptible to rapid flooding, which could cause significant damage to roadways and structures. Ruidoso has a 70% chance of precipitation, creating dangerous conditions for runoff.
In addition to the flood threat, a Marginal Risk for severe storms covers the southeastern plains. Cities including Roswell, Clovis, and Las Vegas could experience strong winds and hail between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. MDT. The primary hazard for most communities under this system will be frequent lightning.
Officials advise those living near the burn scars to have a safety plan and multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Residents should avoid low-lying areas and never attempt to drive through flooded roads. The weather threat is expected to diminish after 9 p.m., but alerts could be extended if heavy rain persists.
