Carlsbad, NM – A magnitude 4.3 earthquake struck southeast New Mexico Monday afternoon, delivering noticeable shaking within seconds across parts of Eddy County and areas near Carlsbad.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 2:01 p.m. MDT about 14 kilometers south of Atoka, with a depth of approximately 10.9 kilometers. The epicenter places the shaking just southeast of the White Sands Missile Range region, an area that occasionally records minor seismic activity.
Initial intensity reports suggest light shaking in nearby communities, though no significant damage or injuries have been reported. The USGS “Did You Feel It?” responses indicate weak to light ground movement across the immediate area.
Carlsbad, Artesia, and surrounding oil and gas operation zones may have experienced brief rattling, particularly in structures not anchored to bedrock. While impacts remain minimal, residents are encouraged to check for small structural issues and secure loose items.
USGS data shows a low probability of stronger aftershocks, though minor tremors cannot be ruled out within the next week.
Officials continue monitoring the situation, and additional updates will be issued if seismic activity increases.
