New Mexico – Record-breaking heat is expected across New Mexico today before a robust fall storm system brings a dramatic temperature drop, high winds, and freezing conditions. Residents should prepare for potential strong to damaging winds beginning Tuesday afternoon, particularly in areas with High Wind Watches in effect. The storm will likely bring significant cooling, with widespread freezing temperatures forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, today’s temperatures could reach new highs, with Albuquerque forecasted at 82°F, just one degree shy of the record set in 1950. Other cities, including Roswell and Socorro, are also expected to approach or surpass previous heat records. However, the unseasonal warmth will be brief, with the storm bringing a sharp temperature drop by Tuesday evening.

Tuesday’s storm is anticipated to bring cooler weather along with potentially damaging gusts reaching up to 58 mph, especially along major highways and open areas. NWS warns that these winds could create hazardous travel conditions, particularly along I-40 and I-25 corridors. Travelers and commuters should remain alert and secure outdoor items to prevent wind damage.

The cold front will also usher in widespread freezing temperatures, with lows expected to plunge into the 20s by Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Sensitive plants, irrigation systems, and outdoor plumbing should be protected against the cold to prevent damage.
