Guadalupe Mountains, TX – High winds are forecast to strike the Guadalupe Mountains region beginning Saturday afternoon, with dangerous gusts expected to challenge drivers and aviators through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, a High Wind Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. MDT (12 p.m. CDT) Saturday through 9 p.m. CDT. The alert covers the Guadalupe Mountains of Eddy County in New Mexico and portions of West Texas, including Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Pine Springs, and Queen.
Forecasters predict sustained west winds of 35 to 45 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph. These conditions pose a serious hazard to high-profile vehicles like RVs, tractor-trailers, and vans navigating mountain roads. The strong winds will also generate severe turbulence near higher elevations, creating danger for low-flying aircraft.
Authorities urge drivers to postpone travel in mountainous regions during peak wind hours. Pilots operating near the terrain should exercise extreme caution due to turbulence.
Blowing dust could further reduce visibility, compounding travel hazards. Officials recommend securing outdoor items and monitoring updated advisories as conditions evolve.
Winds are expected to taper off late Saturday night, offering some relief for the region by Sunday morning.
