El Paso, TX – A blowing dust advisory remains in effect for parts of southern New Mexico and west Texas until 7 p.m. MST Thursday, as strong winds create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, southwest winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, are expected across the region. Visibility may drop to as low as a quarter mile in blowing dust, particularly in the Tularosa Basin, Mesilla Valley, and Hudspeth Highlands. White Sands and the West Central Tularosa Basin are also under a high wind warning, with gusts reaching 60 mph.

Officials warn that reduced visibility could create dangerous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles. Power outages may also occur as tree limbs and power lines could be blown down. Those with respiratory conditions are advised to remain indoors.

If caught in blowing dust, drivers should pull off the road, turn off their lights, and avoid using brakes. Winds are expected to weaken after 7 p.m., improving visibility and travel conditions.
