New York – A winter weather advisory is in effect tonight as freezing rain is set to create hazardous travel conditions across parts of the region. Drivers and pedestrians should exercise caution, with slippery roads, sidewalks, and bridges expected from late evening into Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will begin around 9 p.m. tonight and persist until 9 a.m. Saturday in areas including Rockland and Northern Westchester counties. Total ice accumulations are expected to range from a light glaze to up to one-tenth of an inch. This could cause untreated surfaces to become treacherous and may result in isolated power outages.
The most significant impacts will occur during the early hours of Saturday, coinciding with overnight travel and pre-dawn commutes. Authorities are urging residents to slow down and allow extra travel time if driving. Additionally, residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local transportation departments for the latest road conditions.
The advisory also extends to parts of Connecticut and New Jersey, with freezing rain forecasted to intensify overnight. These areas may see similar conditions, including slick roadways and difficult travel along highways such as the Garden State Parkway and I-87.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to rise slightly after 11 a.m. Saturday, leading to improved travel conditions. However, colder air returning Sunday night could bring additional freezing precipitation early next week.
