Manchester, N.H. – Eastern New Hampshire is facing sweltering conditions as heat index values approach 97 degrees, sending a wave of dangerous humidity and temperatures across Hillsborough and Rockingham counties through 8 p.m. Thursday. Residents in cities like Manchester, Nashua, Salem, and Exeter are urged to take immediate precautions as the heat intensifies overnight and into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, the heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday, with some of the hottest conditions expected during the afternoon hours. High humidity paired with soaring temperatures could quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those without access to air conditioning.

City officials in Manchester and Nashua are reminding residents to check on neighbors, especially older adults and vulnerable populations. Outdoor workers, children, and pets are at highest risk. Local agencies recommend limiting time outdoors, drinking plenty of fluids, and seeking air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Community cooling centers have opened in several cities, including Derry and Salem, to provide relief for those without adequate home cooling.

This heat stretch comes as one of the most intense so far this summer and could challenge power grids as air conditioner use spikes. Similar advisories affected the region last July, with a comparable surge in emergency calls for heat exhaustion.

Temperatures are expected to remain dangerous through Thursday evening, with possible relief arriving by Friday. The National Weather Service may extend advisories if oppressive conditions persist.
