Boston, MA – Thunderstorms packing damaging winds and hail are expected to sweep through parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire this afternoon under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch effective until 8 p.m. Saturday across much of New England.
According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, the watch includes highly populated areas such as Worcester, Springfield, Hartford, and Manchester. Counties under the alert include Middlesex, Worcester, and Hampden in Massachusetts; Hartford and Litchfield in Connecticut; and Hillsborough and Rockingham in New Hampshire.
Gusts up to 60 mph, lightning, and quarter-size hail are possible as storms move east through the region. Downed trees and power outages are a concern, especially in older neighborhoods with above-ground lines. Travel on I-91, I-84, and I-495 may be impacted during the evening commute as heavy rain reduces visibility and creates ponding on roadways.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, stay indoors during thunder, and monitor alerts from local emergency management. If power goes out, avoid using generators indoors and have flashlights ready.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch 218 remains active through 8 p.m., with additional warnings likely as cells intensify. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service.
