Boston, MA – A dangerous heat wave is expected to sweep into New England early next week, bringing temperatures in the upper 90s and heat index values above 100°F across Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and parts of New Hampshire.

According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, a High Risk (greater than 60%) of extreme heat is forecast beginning Monday, June 24. The incoming heat wave will follow several days of intense conditions in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic before pushing north into the Northeast.

Cities including Boston, Hartford, and Providence are expected to face prolonged daytime heat and unusually warm overnight lows in the 70s, increasing the risk for heat-related illness, particularly in areas without adequate air conditioning or cooling resources.

Meteorologists warn that the combination of high humidity and extreme temperatures will create dangerous conditions, particularly for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Utility demand is also expected to spike as residents seek relief from the heat.

Emergency officials are encouraging residents to prepare now by limiting outdoor exposure during peak hours, drinking plenty of water, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and locating nearby cooling shelters in advance of the high temperatures.
