Reno, Nevada – High fire danger is gripping northern Nevada as gusty winds and dry heat push the region into critical conditions Sunday, with Reno under a Red Flag Warning until 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, a Lake Wind Advisory is also in effect for Washoe County and surrounding areas until 9 p.m. Sunday. Wind speeds could reach 25 mph, creating dangerous fire weather and hazardous boating conditions on Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake.
Temperatures are expected to reach 90°F in Reno, with low humidity and winds between 10 to 15 mph throughout the day. These conditions, combined with dry fuels, increase the potential for wildfires to spark and spread quickly. Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly secure trailer chains, and use extreme caution with outdoor equipment.
Communities in Sparks, Sun Valley, and along I-580 should remain alert through the evening. Local fire departments are on standby, and power companies have not ruled out the possibility of safety shutoffs if conditions worsen.
Both warnings expire late Sunday night, but dry, breezy weather will persist into early next week.
