Reno, Nevada – Small watercraft could face dangerous conditions Sunday as gusty winds whip across lakes in western Nevada and northeastern California from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for over a dozen regional lakes, including Pyramid, Topaz, Walker, and Crowley. The NWS warns of wind speeds between 10–20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, capable of producing waves up to 3 feet high on Pyramid Lake. These conditions may capsize kayaks, paddleboards, and small boats.

Recreational areas affected include Lake Davis, Stampede Reservoir, Frenchman Reservoir, and Washoe Lake. Visitors and residents are urged to avoid non-essential boating, wear life jackets, and stay near shorelines. Choppy lake conditions may also limit visibility and maneuverability for paddlecraft.

While the advisory is currently rated as minor (Risk Level 2 out of 5), the potential for accidents increases significantly with high winds. This is a common early-summer hazard in the region as thermal gradients build during warm afternoons.

More updates will be issued if wind conditions intensify or if additional advisories are required Sunday evening.
