Reno, NV – Strong winds are sweeping across northern Nevada today, creating hazardous travel and outdoor conditions as the region braces for gusts up to 70 mph. A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. Friday for Reno, Carson City, and surrounding areas, with potential gusts reaching 140 mph in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service, winds from the west to southwest are expected to peak this morning, especially along ridges and valleys. These conditions could cause widespread power outages, blown-down trees, and travel difficulties, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Those traveling on I-580 or U.S. Highway 395 should exercise extreme caution due to strong crosswinds.
In addition, a Wind Advisory is in effect for Surprise Valley, California, and Northern Washoe County, as gusts of 50 mph are expected in these areas. Meanwhile, Pyramid Lake is under a Lake Wind Advisory, with waves potentially reaching 4 feet. Boaters are urged to avoid the lake until winds subside.
Looking ahead, Saturday will bring calmer weather, with partly sunny skies and a high near 55 degrees in the Reno area. Sunday introduces a 50% chance of light showers, cooling temperatures into the low 50s. By Monday, clear skies and cooler conditions are expected, with highs in the low 40s.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor decorations and loose items to prevent damage during today’s wind event. Emergency kits, including water, flashlights, and backup batteries, are recommended to prepare for possible power outages.
