Omaha, NE – A winter storm is bringing heavy snow and dangerously cold wind chills to Nebraska and Iowa through Thursday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until 6 p.m. Wednesday, with an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow expected in Omaha, Council Bluffs, and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, wind gusts up to 21 mph will combine with subzero temperatures, dropping wind chills to -15°F to -25°F overnight into Thursday. Roads, particularly Interstate 80, are expected to be slick, with reduced visibility making travel dangerous.
Thursday will bring some relief as skies clear, but temperatures will remain well below freezing. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, warning of potential frostbite within 30 minutes for exposed skin.
By Friday night into Saturday, another system could bring light snow, but confidence in accumulation is still low. Residents are urged to limit travel, wear layers for warmth, and check 511 road updates before heading out.
