Hastings, NE – Residents in Hastings and across Nebraska can expect a brief warming trend midweek before a dangerously cold air mass arrives this weekend. Afternoon temperatures are set to climb to near 50 degrees by Thursday, but freezing conditions will return by Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will remain mild through Friday with mostly sunny skies. Highs on Wednesday will approach 42°F, followed by a rise to nearly 49°F on Thursday. Friday will remain pleasant, with highs nearing 46°F, but strong northerly winds will begin ushering in arctic air late in the day.
By Saturday, temperatures will drop dramatically, with daytime highs only reaching the low 20s. Overnight lows could plummet to single digits or below zero. Wind chills will make outdoor activities hazardous, especially on Sunday, when temperatures are forecast to fall to 13°F.
Drivers and pedestrians should exercise caution, especially as freezing conditions are likely to create icy roads and sidewalks by the weekend. Southbound travelers should be aware of possible slick conditions along Highway 6 and nearby interstates as colder air moves in.
Residents are encouraged to prepare for the extreme cold by checking heating systems, insulating pipes, and dressing in layers if heading outdoors. The extended forecast indicates subzero wind chills may persist into early next week.
