Nebraska – Bitter air slices across open fields this morning as strong northwest winds whip through Hastings. Wind chills plunge well below zero, making early outdoor activity uncomfortable and potentially dangerous.

At sunrise, the temperature hovered near 9°F, but gusty winds pushed the wind chill down near −12°F, producing a sharp bite in the air.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, wind chill values between −10° and −15° linger through mid-morning across south-central Nebraska. Breezy northwest winds around 15 to 20 mph, with gusts near 30 mph, continue to drive the bitter feel.

Drivers along U.S. Highway 281, Highway 6, and Interstate 80 may notice strong crosswinds in open rural stretches. High-profile vehicles should use caution, especially where winds sweep across flat farmland.

The air remains dry, and forecasters warn low humidity combined with breezy winds could briefly create near-critical fire weather conditions later today across areas southwest of Hastings. Avoid outdoor burning and secure sparks from equipment.

Despite the cold start, temperatures will begin a rapid turnaround. Highs reach the mid-30s this afternoon, and clouds increase tonight.

A dramatic warmup follows. By Tuesday, readings climb into the mid-50s, and winds ease slightly.

By Wednesday, sunshine returns and temperatures surge toward the mid-70s, delivering a burst of early spring warmth across south-central Nebraska. The sudden change may melt lingering frost quickly, sometimes creating damp pavement that can refreeze late at night.

Long-range trends suggest above-normal temperatures expanding across the Plains late this week, with highs pushing into the 80s by Friday.

Bundle up early today, but keep lighter jackets ready. Spring warmth is racing toward Nebraska.

Five Day Outlook for Hastings, Nebraska

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy with milder air, high near 56°F.
Wednesday: Sunny and much warmer, high near 76°F.
Thursday: Sunny and pleasant, high near 79°F.
Friday: Sunny and warm, high near 86°F.
Saturday: Mostly sunny and mild, high near 83°F.
