Omaha, NE – A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to develop south of Interstate 80 Tuesday evening, posing risks to communities across eastern Nebraska.

According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, a stalled frontal boundary will trigger storms between 7 p.m. and midnight on Tuesday, April 22. The primary threats include large hail exceeding one inch in diameter and wind gusts over 50 mph. The area under the highest local risk level includes parts of southeastern Nebraska, where scattered storm cells may intensify rapidly.

Forecasters report a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms occurring, with a 5-15% chance of an individual storm reaching severe levels. While tornado potential remains low, damaging winds and hail could affect travel, outdoor events, and vulnerable infrastructure, especially in rural counties along the I-80 corridor.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware Tuesday night and review emergency shelter plans. If you have outdoor activities scheduled, officials recommend rescheduling or monitoring alerts closely. Multiple ways to receive warnings, including NOAA Weather Radios and phone alerts, are encouraged.

Storm activity is expected to diminish overnight, with calmer conditions returning by early Wednesday morning.
