Hastings, Nebraska – Golf ball-sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts could slam parts of western and central Nebraska Sunday evening as a line of severe thunderstorms moves in, with the highest risk between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. Monday. The threat is focused west of Highway 281, including Kearney, Lexington, and McCook, where road travel could become dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the region faces a marginal to slight risk for severe weather overnight. The storms may bring damaging hail, isolated wind damage, and heavy rainfall capable of localized flooding. Though tornado risk remains low, brief spin-ups can’t be ruled out.
Communities along and west of U.S. 281—such as Holdrege, Broken Bow, and North Platte—should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Power outages, tree damage, and hazardous nighttime driving are possible. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, secure outdoor items, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.
Another round of storms with enhanced risk is expected Monday evening. More updates and possible advisories will be issued as conditions evolve.
