Hastings, NE – A pair of severe storm systems are expected to impact central and southeastern Nebraska starting late Wednesday night, bringing threats of hail and strong wind gusts through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, isolated to scattered storms may develop mainly after midnight Wednesday, with the potential for hail reaching up to quarter size and winds under 50 mph. These storms are forecast to affect areas southeast of Hastings during the early hours of Thursday.
Another, more severe round of storms is forecast for Thursday between 5 and 11 p.m., primarily targeting regions along and north of Interstate 80, including Grand Island, York, and Columbus. Hail could reach golf ball size, and wind gusts may peak near 60 mph. The Storm Prediction Center places these regions under a level 2 (slight) risk for severe weather.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor local weather updates, and avoid travel during peak storm hours if possible. While April storms are not uncommon in Nebraska, the projected hail size and wind speed warrant heightened awareness across the state.
Emergency alerts and storm warnings will be updated as conditions evolve throughout Wednesday night and Thursday.
