Nebraska – Dry prairie winds are already brushing across south-central Nebraska this morning, and the air feels unusually warm for early March. That warmth is arriving with a warning: dangerous fire weather conditions are building quickly across the Hastings area today.
Sunshine dominates skies across Adams County as temperatures surge toward 70°F this afternoon. Southwest winds strengthen through the day, frequently gusting near 40 mph, drying grasses and fields across the region.
Because of the combination of strong wind and extremely low humidity, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from noon through 9 p.m. Any spark could spread rapidly across dry vegetation.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Even small fires could grow quickly under these windy conditions.
Travel along Interstate 80 and Highway 281 may also become difficult for high-profile vehicles as crosswinds strengthen through the afternoon. Drivers should keep both hands on the wheel, especially across open farmland.
Temperatures cool slightly Friday with highs around 56°F, but breezy conditions remain across south-central Nebraska.
Another warm push arrives Saturday as temperatures rebound to around 67°F under partly sunny skies. The mild stretch won’t last long, however.
Meteorologists are now tracking a weekend system expected to move into the central Plains Saturday night. Rain will likely develop first, then colder air may allow precipitation to mix with or change to wet snow late Saturday night into Sunday.
Sunday looks sharply colder with highs near 37°F and gusty winds returning. Periods of rain and snow could produce slick patches and reduced visibility, especially north of Interstate 80.
By Sunday night, skies begin clearing but temperatures plunge toward 11°F, bringing a harsh reminder that winter is not finished across Nebraska.
Long-range signals still point to a warmer pattern returning across the Plains later next week as spring slowly gains ground.
