Hastings, Nebraska – Dense fog is blanketing central Nebraska this morning, drastically reducing visibility along major roadways and prompting safety warnings from officials.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, patchy dense fog developed overnight and could expand further around sunrise. Visibility has dropped below one mile in several areas, with some spots—like Odessa and Wood River along I-80—seeing conditions as low as a quarter mile. The fog is expected to gradually lift by 10 a.m. CDT.

Drivers on highways including I-80, Hwy 136 near Riverton, and Hwy 6 near Axtell are being urged to slow down and allow extra time during the morning commute. Rapid changes in visibility may occur, especially in low-lying or open areas. Use low-beam headlights and avoid sudden stops when traveling through dense patches.

While no major road closures have been reported, local law enforcement is monitoring conditions closely. This is the first significant fog event in the region since early spring, and it serves as a reminder of the risks during transitional weather.

Visibility should steadily improve through mid-morning, but drivers should remain alert for lingering fog in rural and river valley areas. Updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
