Hastings, Nebraska – Smoke drifting from Canadian wildfires and a fresh round of thunderstorms could make Friday a double threat across central Nebraska.
According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the National Weather Service, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect for Hastings and much of eastern Nebraska through noon Friday due to elevated PM 2.5 particles. The air is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, particularly children, seniors, and those with heart or lung conditions. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exertion and avoid prolonged activity.
Meanwhile, storm chances increase Friday afternoon into Friday night, with north winds and a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms between 7 p.m. and midnight. Although rainfall amounts should remain light, isolated downpours and brief gusty winds can’t be ruled out.
Saturday brings a slight chance of morning showers and isolated storms before 1 p.m., followed by drier, partly sunny skies. Highs will rise into the low 80s Saturday and upper 70s Sunday, with more pleasant conditions returning for the second half of the weekend.
Looking ahead, next week starts off warm and mostly dry, with Monday through Wednesday highs reaching into the mid-80s under mostly sunny skies.
