Omaha, NE – Nebraska is under a critical fire weather alert, as strong winds and low humidity combine to increase fire risks across the state.
The National Weather Service forecasts that winds between 20-30 mph, along with relative humidity as low as 15%, will create dangerous fire conditions through Monday evening. Central Nebraska, particularly areas with ERC fuels in the 98th percentile, faces the highest threat of fire spread. These dry fuels, combined with the fast-moving cold front, increase the risk of large-scale wildfires.
NWS officials have urged residents to avoid outdoor flames and take precautions to ensure no sparks are emitted from vehicles or equipment. The fire warning will remain in effect until conditions improve. As the cold front moves eastward, fire risks could spread to the Mississippi River Valley.
