Omaha, Nebraska – Severe thunderstorms are expected to slam northeast Nebraska on Monday, bringing two waves of dangerous weather including large hail, damaging winds, and possible tornadoes along the South Dakota border.

According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office, the first round of severe storms will strike from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., targeting counties along the SD/NE state line with hail over 2 inches in diameter, wind gusts over 60 mph, and isolated tornadoes. A second, potentially more widespread event is forecast between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday, as a storm complex moves in from the west overnight.

Cities at highest risk include Ainsworth, O’Neill, Wayne, and Norfolk, where outdoor plans should be reconsidered. Emergency managers urge residents to monitor warnings closely and ensure they have multiple ways to receive alerts overnight, especially with storms expected while many are asleep.

Isolated flash flooding is also possible under the strongest cells, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Monday’s system could mirror similar June events from past years that produced tornadoes in northeast Nebraska counties.

Storm watches and warnings may be issued throughout the day. Residents should stay weather-aware through early Tuesday morning.
