Hastings, NE – Residents across central Nebraska and northern Kansas are experiencing dangerously cold temperatures early Thursday morning, with wind chills plummeting as low as 30 below zero.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM CST for areas including Grand Island, Kearney, York, and Phillipsburg. The extreme cold can cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.
Even with light winds under 10 mph, temperatures will remain at dangerous levels. Later this morning, as winds shift south-southwest, temperatures will rise slightly, but the bitter cold will persist.
Residents should wear layers, cover exposed skin, and limit outdoor activity. Those traveling should carry an emergency kit in their vehicles.
