Omaha, Nebraska – Wildfire danger is rising sharply across northeast Nebraska this Sunday as unseasonably warm temperatures and strong winds combine with dry fuels to create critical fire conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday for counties including Madison, Stanton, Cuming, and Burt. Winds from the south are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, while relative humidity may drop as low as 17%. Afternoon highs could climb into the upper 80s to around 90, further drying out already parched grasslands.
The primary fuel concern is dry tall grasses, which can ignite and spread flames quickly under these conditions. Communities from Norfolk to Fremont should avoid outdoor burning, refrain from parking on grassy areas, and take extra care with equipment that may spark—like mowers or chainsaws.
Drivers and farmers working in open fields should remain especially alert. This is the first widespread Fire Weather Watch of the season for eastern Nebraska, with fire-prone conditions reminiscent of May 2022’s elevated wildfire activity.
Fire Weather Watches are precautionary and could be upgraded to Red Flag Warnings if conditions deteriorate. Residents should stay updated through the NWS and local emergency management alerts.
