North Platte, NE – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of western and north-central Nebraska from noon CST (11 a.m. MST) to 7 p.m. CST (6 p.m. MST) today, due to low humidity and strong winds that could rapidly spread fires.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in North Platte, the affected areas include:

Eastern Panhandle/Crescent Lake NWR

Sandhills/Valentine NWR/Nebraska National Forest

Niobrara Valley/Fort Niobrara NWR/Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest

Loup Rivers Basin

Critical Fire Weather Conditions

Winds: West at 20-30 mph, gusting up to 45 mph, shifting northwest this evening.

Humidity: As low as 15%.

Temperatures: Highs reaching 72°F.

Lightning: Not expected.

Fire Danger & Safety Precautions

With dry conditions, strong winds, and warm temperatures, any fire that starts could spread uncontrollably. Residents are urged to:

Avoid open flames or outdoor burning.

Properly dispose of cigarettes and avoid parking on dry grass.

Secure loose objects that could be affected by strong winds.
