Omaha, NE – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for large portions of Nebraska on Friday afternoon and evening due to strong winds and low relative humidity, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), affected areas include Knox, Cedar, Antelope, Pierce, Wayne, Boone, Madison, Stanton, Cuming, Platte, and Colfax counties in northeast Nebraska. In central Nebraska, Valley, Greeley, Nance, Sherman, Howard, Merrick, Polk, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, and Hamilton counties are under alert. The Sandhills region, including the Nebraska National Forest and Niobrara Valley, is also at risk.
Forecasters warn of northwest winds ranging from 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 20 percent, further elevating fire concerns. Temperatures may reach up to 61 degrees in some areas.
The NWS urges residents to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions to prevent accidental fires. Any fire that ignites could spread rapidly and be difficult to contain.
