Omaha, NE – A cold front will bring rain and snow to Nebraska this week, potentially disrupting Thanksgiving travel along I-80. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of a storm system arriving Wednesday, bringing a mix of rain and snow that could linger into early Thursday morning.
According to the NWS Omaha/Valley office, Monday will see breezy conditions with temperatures peaking near 38 degrees, as colder air sweeps into the region. Winds could gust up to 30 mph, creating difficult driving conditions. Travelers are advised to use caution, particularly during high wind periods.
By midweek, a stronger system is expected to develop, with rain beginning early Wednesday before transitioning to snow as temperatures drop below freezing overnight. Snow flurries could persist into the pre-dawn hours of Thanksgiving, potentially creating slick roadways. Daytime highs on Thanksgiving will struggle to reach 34 degrees, while wind chills will make it feel even colder.
The NWS advises residents to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential delays if traveling. “Plan extra time for commutes on Wednesday and into Thursday,” the agency stated in a Sunday briefing. Drivers should ensure vehicles are winter-ready, including having proper tires and emergency supplies.
Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday will bring calmer but colder conditions, with highs only reaching the low 30s. Skies are expected to clear, offering better travel conditions into the weekend.
