Omaha, NE – Nebraska is set for an unseasonably warm start to February, with temperatures climbing into the 50s this weekend. However, the rapid thaw could increase the risk of ice jams in local rivers, potentially leading to minor flooding.
According to the National Weather Service, Saturday will bring increasing clouds with a high of 50°F, while Sunday will be the warmest day of the week, reaching 55°F under partly sunny skies. Winds will pick up slightly on Saturday, with gusts reaching up to 28 mph.
The warm weather may cause melting ice to break apart in the Elkhorn and Platte river basins, potentially leading to ice jams and rising water levels. Officials urge residents near these areas to stay alert and monitor conditions, as minor flooding could develop quickly if blockages occur.
Monday will see partly sunny skies with a high of 41°F before a gradual cooldown begins. By Tuesday, temperatures will drop into the mid-30s, with mostly cloudy conditions expected through midweek.
While the weekend offers a taste of spring, residents should remain cautious of fluctuating river conditions and prepare for cooler temperatures in the days ahead.
