Rapid City, SD – A significant winter storm is set to impact portions of South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming starting Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for Bennett and Todd counties in South Dakota from Thursday afternoon through late Thursday night. Areas near the Nebraska border could see over 6 inches of snow, making travel conditions dangerous, especially during the Thursday evening commute.
In Nebraska and Wyoming, winter storm conditions are expected to intensify Thursday evening and continue through Friday morning. Box Butte and Southern Sioux counties in Nebraska, along with Goshen County in Wyoming, could receive between 4 and 8 inches of snow. A lighter round of snow may precede the heavier accumulation, with hazardous conditions impacting both Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.
North-central Nebraska, including Cherry, Keya Paha, Brown, Rock, Blaine, and Loup counties, is also under a Winter Storm Watch from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon. These areas could see between 4 and 7 inches of snow, with wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph, further reducing visibility and making travel treacherous.
