Hastings, NE – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for most of south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas from noon to 8 p.m. CDT on Monday due to strong winds and low relative humidity, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, winds from the west to southwest will reach speeds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 10 to 15 percent, creating critical fire weather conditions.
Areas affected in Kansas include Smith, Jewell, Osborne, and Mitchell counties. In Nebraska, the warning covers Valley, Greeley, Nance, Sherman, Howard, Merrick, Polk, Dawson, Buffalo, Hall, Hamilton, York, Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, Adams, Clay, Fillmore, Webster, Nuckolls, and Thayer counties.
Officials warn that any fire that ignites in these conditions will spread rapidly, making outdoor burning highly dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid any activities that could spark fires and to report any signs of wildfire immediately.
A Red Flag Warning indicates that extreme fire behavior is possible due to the combination of strong winds, dry air, and warm temperatures. Residents should remain alert and follow local emergency guidelines to prevent fire outbreaks.
