Washington, D.C. – A powerful Arctic cold front is set to grip much of the United States starting Wednesday, bringing subzero temperatures, snow squalls, and widespread travel challenges. The National Weather Service warns of life-threatening wind chills as low as -30°F affecting millions from the Rockies to the East Coast.
According to the NWS Weather Prediction Center, the cold air will surge southward from the Northern Plains, reaching the Gulf Coast by Friday and the Eastern Seaboard over the weekend. Snow squalls are expected to create hazardous driving conditions from Montana to the Midwest, with potential impacts spreading to the Northeast by Thursday night.
Dangerously low wind chills will pose frostbite risks within minutes for exposed skin. The Upper Midwest and Rockies could see minimum wind chills plummet to -40°F through Tuesday. Southern states like Texas and Alabama are not exempt, with freezing temperatures anticipated by Saturday.
Travelers are urged to monitor local conditions and delay non-essential travel, particularly along major interstates such as I-70 and I-80, which are likely to see reduced visibility and icy roads. Authorities also encourage preparing emergency kits for vehicles, including blankets, food, and water.
The cold front is expected to linger into early next week, keeping much of the nation in a deep freeze. Residents are advised to check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure pets are kept indoors. For updates, follow the National Weather Service for the latest forecasts and alerts.
