Wichita, KS – A sharp drop in overnight temperatures is triggering freeze warnings across five states, putting early spring crops and vegetation at risk.
According to the National Weather Service, widespread sub-freezing conditions are expected from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. CDT Monday, with lows ranging from 25 to 30 degrees across central and southern Kansas, much of Oklahoma, northern Texas, northern Arkansas, and central Missouri. Areas including Wichita, Tulsa, Fort Smith, Kansas City, and Sherman are under active alerts.
Forecasters say the cold snap could severely impact unprotected plants, blooming trees, and early vegetable gardens, particularly in regions where spring planting is already underway. Outdoor plumbing and irrigation systems may also be vulnerable if left exposed.
Monday’s freeze comes as an early April chill sweeps the region following a mild start to spring. Additional freeze watches remain in place for late Monday night into Tuesday morning, meaning risks could extend beyond a single night.
Residents are urged to cover plants, disconnect hoses, and wrap exposed pipes to prevent damage. Farmers and gardeners across the Central Plains and Midwest should take protective steps as temperatures dip well below average for early April.
