Charleston, West Virginia – A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for large portions of northern, northeast, and southeastern West Virginia as heavy snow and strong winds threaten travel from Friday morning through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches are possible across the watch area. Wind gusts could reach 45 to 55 miles per hour in the highest elevations, increasing the potential for blowing snow and reduced visibility.

The watch includes Upshur, Barbour, Nicholas, Webster, Pocahontas, and Randolph counties. Communities potentially affected include Buckhannon, Philippi, Elkins, Summersville, Richwood, Webster Springs, Snowshoe, Harman, Cowen, and areas near Holly River State Park.

Forecasters warn that travel could become very difficult at times, particularly during the Friday evening commute as snowfall intensifies and winds strengthen. Blowing and drifting snow may quickly cover roadways, especially in elevated and exposed areas.

Strong wind gusts could also lead to tree damage, raising concerns for blocked roads and localized power disruptions in mountain communities.

Residents are advised to monitor forecast updates closely as the storm approaches, prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, and adjust travel plans if necessary.
