Mount Shasta, CA – The USDA Forest Service Mount Shasta Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning for South Central Siskiyou County, in effect through 12 p.m. Thursday. Officials warn of dangerous avalanche conditions due to an exceptionally powerful atmospheric river impacting the region.

According to the National Weather Service, prolonged heavy snowfall and rain-on-snow are expected, significantly increasing the risk of large and destructive avalanches. Areas of concern include Mount Shasta, Castle Lake, the Eddy Mountains, and Ash Creek Butte. Debris flows may also occur in drainages like Cascade Gulch and Mud Creek.

Recreational users are strongly advised to avoid avalanche terrain and consult Shasta Avalanche Center for updates.
