Broadus, MT – A blast of late-season snow is sweeping across southeastern Montana, prompting travel concerns and reduced visibility throughout Carter and Powder River counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. MDT Thursday, warning of wet snow accumulation between 1 to 3 inches. Higher elevations and mountain passes are likely to see the greatest snow totals.

Forecasters say the snowfall began early Thursday, following an overnight rain-to-snow transition. The wet, heavy snow may fall intensely at times, cutting visibility to under three miles and leaving slushy, slick roads in its wake. Communities including Broadus, Ekalaka, Alzada, and surrounding areas should prepare for difficult driving conditions during morning and midday travel hours.

Drivers along U.S. Highway 212 are advised to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and allow for extended travel times. Officials recommend checking Montana’s 511 road report system before heading out.

Though accumulations are modest, the sudden nature of the snow and potential for quick changes in visibility can catch drivers off guard. The advisory is expected to expire late Thursday afternoon as precipitation tapers off and temperatures begin to climb.
