Billings, Montana –

Heavy, wet snow and howling winds threaten Montana’s high country as a winter storm watch takes effect Sunday evening, potentially dropping up to two feet of snow across the Absaroka/Beartooth and Crazy Mountains, with gusts reaching 50 mph.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Billings and Great Falls, the watch stretches from Sunday night through Monday afternoon, targeting the Absaroka/Beartooth Mountains, Crazy Mountains, and including high-traffic areas like Big Sky, Raynolds Pass, and West Yellowstone. Snow accumulations may reach 8 inches in the Gallatin, Madison, and Centennial Mountains, with travel expected to be “very difficult” due to slick roads and poor visibility.

Cooke City and surrounding recreational hotspots could see heavy blowing snow, making backcountry access risky. The wet, heavy nature of the snow raises the threat of downed tree limbs and isolated power outages, especially as spring growth begins. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel in mountain zones. If you must shovel, take frequent breaks—heavy, wet snow increases heart risk, especially for those with medical history.

The storm is expected to taper by Monday afternoon, but further advisories are possible. Stay tuned to local alerts for the latest updates as conditions develop.
