Great Falls, MT – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to Montana, prompting warnings and watches through Monday. Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Friday at 8 a.m. until Sunday at 5 a.m. for areas along the Continental Divide, including Glacier National Park. Snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches are expected in lower elevations, while mountain regions could see up to 2 feet. Wind gusts may reach 75 mph, leading to whiteout conditions.
A Winter Storm Watch follows from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon, with an additional 5 to 10 inches of snow possible. Northwest Beaverhead County, including Chief Joseph Pass and Big Hole Pass, is also under a Winter Storm Warning from 8 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Sunday, with 9 to 18 inches expected in the mountains.
Drivers should prepare for hazardous road conditions, particularly in mountain passes where tire chains may be required. The Montana Department of Transportation advises checking 511 road updates before traveling. Those venturing outdoors should bring emergency supplies, as conditions may change rapidly.
