Billings, MT – A winter storm system is set to bring snow and rain to Montana starting Sunday, causing potential travel disruptions. Snow is expected at lower elevations by Sunday night, with heavier snowfall in the Beartooth-Absaroka region.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, precipitation will begin as rain Sunday afternoon before transitioning to snow overnight. Snow accumulations will range from 1 to 2 inches in lower elevations and up to 12 inches in mountainous areas. Temperatures will drop sharply, with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens by Tuesday.

Roads, especially U.S. Highway 212 and Interstate 90, may become slick, particularly during the Monday morning commute. Drivers are urged to plan for slower travel and to call 511 for road conditions before heading out.

Looking ahead, light snow is expected Monday into Tuesday, with a 10% to 20% chance of additional accumulation. By New Year’s Day, conditions are expected to stabilize, though temperatures will remain frigid, with highs near freezing.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and take precautions, including winterizing vehicles and preparing for possible delays.
