Billings, MT – A chilly weather system will bring a significant shift in conditions across southern Montana starting late Wednesday, with rain transitioning to wet snow through early Friday, especially in higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, precipitation will begin late Wednesday evening, increasing in intensity overnight. Mountain and foothill areas—including Red Lodge, Cooke City, and the Beartooth foothills—could receive more than an inch of moisture, much of it falling as wet snow by Thursday.

The highest confidence lies in a wet and cool pattern lasting into early Friday. However, forecasters note uncertainty around snow totals in lower elevations and the exact timing of the rain-snow transition. Snow levels are expected to drop Wednesday night, with some accumulation possible even in lower elevations, particularly west of Rosebud County.

Motorists traveling on mountain routes such as U.S. Highway 212 should prepare for reduced visibility and slick conditions. Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor local forecasts and consider delaying travel plans in the region.

Temperatures will remain unseasonably cool through the end of the week, and impacts may linger into early Friday before conditions gradually improve.
