Billings, Montana – Montanans should brace for a stormy evening Thursday as isolated severe thunderstorms develop across central and eastern parts of the state, bringing the potential for 65 mph wind gusts and small hail.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, scattered storms are expected to move in between 3 p.m. and midnight. While most will be brief, a few could turn severe, especially in areas including Billings, Miles City, and Roundup. The primary hazard is strong wind, though localized hail may accompany stronger cells.

Communities from Great Falls to Sheridan could see rapid shifts in weather, with dry, hot conditions giving way to fast-moving storms. Highs in the 80s and low 90s will add instability to the atmosphere. Storms are forecast to move northeast, bringing brief downpours, sudden wind shifts, and lightning.

Residents with outdoor plans should monitor alerts, secure loose items, and identify safe shelter locations in advance. Power outages and downed limbs are possible in higher-impact zones.

Warnings remain in effect through midnight. Additional storm chances may develop into the weekend.
