Billings, Mont. – Severe thunderstorms packing wind gusts up to 70 mph and large hail are expected to sweep across eastern Montana through 11 p.m. Sunday, prompting a watch that spans from Big Horn to Wibaux counties.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 246 is now in effect for 11 counties in the state, including Carter, Custer, Fallon, and Richland. Residents should expect strong winds capable of downing trees and power lines, along with hail potentially large enough to damage vehicles and roofs. The watch was issued at 4:25 p.m. MDT and includes a risk for frequent lightning and isolated flooding.

In Rosebud County, emergency managers are urging drivers to avoid travel on open stretches of I-94 due to sudden wind shifts and poor visibility. Dawson and Prairie counties may also see scattered power outages as storms roll eastward into the evening. Schools and events in the region should remain alert for sudden warnings.

To stay safe, move indoors as storms approach, secure loose outdoor items, and keep phones charged in case of outages. Those with livestock or machinery in the open should prepare for fast-changing weather.

The watch remains active until 11 p.m. MDT, and additional warnings may be issued as storms intensify.
