Glasgow, Mont. – Wildfire danger will spike across eastern Montana on Sunday as hot, dry, and windy conditions trigger a Red Flag Warning from noon to 8 p.m., with the highest risk expected late in the day.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, fire weather zones 120 and 122—including Fort Peck Reservation, Daniels, Roosevelt, Sheridan, Dawson, and Richland counties—will face south winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusting up to 30 mph. Humidity levels could plummet to just 10 percent, creating critical fire conditions ahead of possible thunderstorms between 6 and 8 p.m.
The warning spans a broad area including communities such as Wolf Point, Sidney, Glendive, and Plentywood. Officials caution that any fires ignited in this environment could spread rapidly, particularly in areas with cured grasses and dry fuels. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
Residents should avoid any open flames, secure trailer chains, and be alert for any signs of smoke. Fire departments across the region have been notified and are on standby.
The Red Flag Warning will expire at 8 p.m. Sunday, but officials warn that fire risk may remain elevated into the week if dry conditions persist.
