Glasgow, Montana – Boaters on Fort Peck Lake face hazardous conditions through early Thursday as strong east winds stir up 4-foot waves and poor visibility from smoke.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, a Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. MDT Thursday for Fort Peck Lake, including the communities of Glasgow, Malta, Jordan, Winnett, and Circle. Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph.
These winds will generate rough waters, especially dangerous for small watercraft. Waves may top four feet, and reduced visibility due to smoke could further endanger boaters.
Agencies urge anyone on the water to wear life jackets, secure loose gear, and avoid unnecessary travel across open waters. Small boats are at higher risk of capsizing in these conditions.
This advisory affects a wide area of northeastern and central Montana, from Phillips and Valley counties to Garfield, McCone, and Petroleum counties.
Conditions are expected to ease Thursday morning, but updated alerts may be issued if winds persist.
