Glasgow, Montana – Boaters on Fort Peck Lake should brace for hazardous waves and powerful wind gusts up to 35 mph through 7 p.m. Tuesday, as a Lake Wind Advisory takes effect across eastern Montana.

According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will build throughout the day, producing wave heights of 2 to 4 feet on Fort Peck Lake. The advisory, active from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. MDT, affects Phillips, Valley, Petroleum, Garfield, and McCone counties.

Winds will peak during the afternoon, creating dangerous conditions for small craft and recreational boats. The rough water could lead to capsizing or loss of control, especially for unpowered or lightly loaded vessels. Cities near the lake, including Glasgow, Jordan, and Circle, will experience breezy conditions and cooler daytime highs in the low 50s.

Boaters are urged to use extreme caution and delay non-essential trips. Secure loose gear, wear life jackets, and avoid open waters if possible.

Winds are expected to ease by sunset, but NWS Glasgow advises continued caution through early evening as lake conditions gradually settle.
