Billings, MT – A significant winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and strong winds to Montana this weekend, creating hazardous travel conditions across the region. The storm will begin Friday night, peaking Saturday and Sunday with widespread snow expected, especially in the mountains and along key routes like US-212.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Billings, snow accumulation could exceed six inches in higher elevations, while valleys are likely to see a mix of rain and snow Friday night, transitioning to all snow by Saturday morning. Travelers should plan for delays, particularly along highways US-212 and I-90, where reduced visibility and icy roads are anticipated.
Wind gusts of up to 25 mph may cause blowing snow, further reducing visibility and making conditions dangerous. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours and to ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.
By Sunday night, snow is expected to taper off, with colder temperatures and partly cloudy skies moving in for Monday. Highs will remain in the 30s through the start of the week, with lows dropping into the teens.
This winter storm serves as a reminder to stay informed and prepared during Montana’s harsh weather season. For the latest updates, monitor NWS alerts and check road conditions at the Montana Department of Transportation website.
