Missoula, MT – A powerful winter storm is expected to impact western Montana and eastern Idaho from Friday through Monday, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Missoula, snowfall totals could reach between 2 and 26 inches, with the heaviest accumulations in mountain regions such as the Bitterroot, Clearwater, and Sapphire Mountains. A mix of freezing rain and snow is expected Friday night into Saturday, followed by another wave of heavy snowfall Sunday evening through Monday.

Major highways, including Highway 93 near Lost Trail Pass, Highway 2 from Kalispell to Libby, and Highway 83 through Swan Lake, could see dangerous travel conditions. The storm may significantly impact commutes, especially over mountain passes.

Authorities warn of possible road closures, power outages, and widespread disruptions. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, carry emergency supplies, and stay updated on changing conditions.

Residents in affected areas should prepare for potential power outages and ensure they have adequate supplies. The storm is expected to ease by Monday evening, but lingering icy conditions could continue into Tuesday.
