Springfield, MO – Freezing fog and black ice are creating hazardous driving conditions across southwest Missouri this morning, particularly on untreated roads and near valleys and rivers. The National Weather Service warns that visibility is reduced to half a mile or less in some areas, with patchy freezing fog expected to dissipate by 8 a.m.
Black ice is also a significant concern after overnight refreezing of snowmelt, especially on bridges and shaded roadways. Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and avoid sudden braking to reduce the risk of accidents.
After the fog clears, temperatures will rise to a high near 40°F under sunny skies today. Overnight, lows will drop to 25°F, creating the potential for refreezing and slick spots into Sunday morning.
The extended forecast shows a chilly week ahead, with highs on Sunday in the upper 30s and lows between 10-19°F overnight. Monday will be colder, with a high of 28°F and a low of 11°F. Temperatures will gradually rebound midweek, with sunny skies and highs reaching 33-40°F by Wednesday.
Residents should stay cautious on roads and dress warmly for the frigid temperatures in the coming days.
