St. Louis, Missouri – St. Louis just closed out its wettest April in recorded history, with 10.85 inches of rain officially measured by the end of the month—breaking a 135-year-old record. Heavy downpours on April 30 pushed the monthly total just past the previous high of 10.84 inches set in 1893.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, a series of soaking storms on April 4, 19, 20, 29, and 30 delivered the bulk of the month’s rainfall. The final push came Tuesday, when widespread showers swept across eastern Missouri, drenching roads and leaving behind pools of standing water in urban areas.

City streets, including stretches of I-64 and I-70, saw delays from water-covered lanes, while flash flooding temporarily affected parts of St. Charles and Jefferson counties. Public works crews worked overnight to clear drains and monitor river levels, which remain elevated but below flood stage.

Residents are urged to check their basements and sump pumps, as saturated ground continues to pose a risk for seepage and minor flooding. With more rain possible this weekend, officials recommend keeping emergency kits stocked and avoiding low-lying routes during storms.

Rain chances ease midweek, but more updates are expected if conditions change.
