Springfield, Mo. – Flash flooding and power outages are possible Tuesday, June 3rd, as strong thunderstorms sweep into southern Missouri during peak afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms begins around 7 a.m., increasing sharply after 1 p.m. as multiple storm cells move through the region. Gusts could top 24 mph, with temperatures soaring to 85°F before rain cools the area late in the day.

Greene, Christian, and Webster counties may see isolated storms early, with a stronger line of heavy rain and lightning forming near Springfield by late afternoon. The risk climbs further into Tuesday night, when NWS places an 80 percent chance for widespread showers and possible severe storms. Flash flooding in low-lying areas and urban roads is possible.

Travelers on Interstate 44 should expect slick conditions and limited visibility Tuesday evening. Avoid non-essential travel during storms, secure outdoor items, and ensure mobile devices stay charged.

Rain continues through Wednesday, with another round of thunderstorms likely into Wednesday night. New rainfall totals could exceed one inch in some areas.

The storm system will push east by Thursday, bringing a drier pattern by the weekend.
